Freedom-to-Work provides workplace fairness and equality, giving workers more control over their own lives, pocketbook and employment. Michigan workers will be free to choose how they engage with labor organizations.
A total of 23 other states currently provide working families workplace fairness and equality. With this reform, in Michigan, a person, employee or any other organization, may not require an individual to:
- Become or remain a member of a labor organization;
- Pay dues, fees, assessments or other charges of any kind or amount to a labor organization; or
- Pay any fees or donations to a third party as a condition of employment.
Freedom-to-Work simply protects employees from being required to join and /or pay dues to a labor union as a condition of getting or keeping a job. It prohibits the inclusion of “security” provisions in labor contracts that force workers to join a union against their choice.
